New Paytrail: Updating payment service settings in the Shopify platform

Shopify announced in the fall 2021, that it has launched a new way of integrating payment services into its platform. Since Shopify will no longer support the current way after the turn of the year, you will need to update your payment service settings by the end of this year.

In this article, you'll find instructions for updating and the key differences between the versions.

The main differences between the new and the old integration

After the update, you will have access to almost identical features as before. The update will also allow for more flexible future development of payment services.

  • The name of the payment service (“gateway”) in Shopify reports and interface responses will be “Paytrail” if redirecting to the payment method selection page and “Paytrail / <payment method name>” for a single payment method.
    {"order": ... "gateway":"Paytrail"}
If your store is connected to an ERP system or similar to which payment data is exported, the change in the name of the payment service will probably have to be taken into account.

  • In the future, only the “payment_id” field can be found in Shopify's transaction data, which can be used to link an order to a payment. In other words, data starting with “x _” will no longer be available.

Update payment service settings

NOTE! Enabling the new integration requires Owner-level permissions in Shopify.

  1. Log in to your Shopify store.
  2. To start the installation, click on this link
  3. Select “Install app”:

  4. Enter your Merchant ID in the “Production Merchant Id” field and your Secret key in the “Production Merchant Key” field:

If needed, you can find the Merchant ID and Secret key in Paytrail's new Merchant Panel under Merchant account. If you do not have an account for the new Merchant panel, please contact customer service.
If you just want to test the integration, you can use the test IDs on the left side of the configuration page as Test and Production IDs (make sure that you have test mode on in settings).

  5. Finally, activate the payment method by selecting “Activate Paytrail” at the bottom of the page:

The payment method choices shown on this settings page do not affect the payment methods available, but only the logos that appear when you select a payment method on the checkout page. If you want to change the available payment methods, you must select them via the Merchant Panel. Instructions can be found in our Help Center.
When “Test mode” is selected, the integration uses Test Merchant IDs and Shopify clearly records payments as test payments.

Disabling the old integration

Once the new integration is enabled, you should disable the old integration.

  1. Go back to the "Alternative payment methods" section of the store settings.
  2. Select "Manage" for the payment method you want to disable.
  3. Select “Deactivate <payment service name>”.
