How the VAT rate increase to 25,5% affects Paytrail’s payment service

Finland’s VAT rate increased from 24% to 25,5% on 01.09.2024 and Paytrail’s service fully supports this change. VAT is applied based on the delivery of goods or services and is fixed at the moment payment data is transferred to Paytrail. Learn how the current VAT rate is handled in our system and what this means for your e-commerce transactions.

  • Decimals in VAT rates are supported
  • Values between 0 and 100 with one decimal place are accepted
  • The decimal separator must be a period (for example, 25.5)

How the VAT rate is applied

The VAT rate is based on the delivery of goods or the provision of the service. For physical products, VAT applies to the tax period when the goods are delivered.

If products were delivered to the buyer on or before 31.08.2024, the applicable VAT rate was 24%, even if the payment took place in September.

From Paytrail’s system perspective, the VAT rate is determined at the moment payment information is transferred from your online store. Because VAT details always come from the store, any corrections or updates must be made directly in your online store’s platform. Once a payment has been created, the VAT rate cannot be changed. VAT details also cannot be modified later in settlement reports that have already been generated.

Follow correct VAT practice

Ensure your e-commerce platform, accounting systems, and partners continue to apply the 25,5% VAT rate correctly.
